Porto Wine Tours

On Porto wine tours you cross to the port lodges, which stand side by side on the Vila Nova de Gaia riverbank, across the Ponte Luís I from Ribeira. A guided walk takes you through 3 of them with 7 tastings in about 4 hours. What separates the tours is the shape: several lodges with a guide, one cellar with an audio guide, a boat on the Douro, or a full day in the Douro Valley. The lodges also sell visits on their own sites.

Guided Port Wine Tours Through Several Lodges

These walks cross the river to Gaia and take in 3 port houses each, with a guide who explains the styles and picks the cellars.

The Three Multi-Lodge Walks

The three walks share the same shape, 3 lodges on foot, but they differ on price, time, group size and pours. The figures below come from the tour listings on this page. Port Wine Lodges Walking Tour is the longest, Port Wine Cellars Tour is the fastest and smallest, and Port and Douro Wine Tasting Tour pours the most.

What the Walk Adds

A single lodge visit shows you one house and its own ports. A guided walk adds a local guide who explains how port styles differ, and it adds contrast. On Port Wine Lodges Walking Tour the 3 houses are a traditional cellar, a small producer tasting room and a modern interactive museum, so you see a big name and a small producer in one afternoon.

On Port and Douro Wine Tasting Tour the 9 pours mix Port with DOC Douro table wines, which the single-lodge visits do not. Meeting points differ. The pick meets by the pillars of the old Pensil bridge on Rua da Ribeira Negra on the Porto side.

The 3-cellars tour meets in front of the tourism office, and the Douro walk meets outside the Gaia tourism office on Avenida Diogo Leite on the riverfront. None of the three includes hotel pickup.

One Cellar, One Tasting: The Single-Lodge Visits

One lodge, one visit, one house's ports. These are the shortest and cheapest port wine tasting options in Porto.

Five Lodge Visits at a Glance

The five lodge visits below are listed with their card prices, durations and pours from the tour cards on this page. Taylor's, Cálem and Poças all sit under $30, while Graham's is a live guided tour at $45.

Taylor's Port Cellar Tour$28Self-guided with 13-language audio guide3 ports2-3 hours

Poças Port Cellar Tour$26Guided visit to the aging cellar3 ports1.5 hours
Real Companhia Velha Cellar Tour$22Cellars plus the private Silva Reis family cellarSelected ports1-2 hours

How They Differ

Each house runs its visit differently. Taylor's is self-paced with an audio guide in 13 languages played on your phone, so bring headphones. Graham's is a live guided tour of a working 1890 lodge with over 2,000 pipes.

Cálem starts with a 15-minute interactive museum before the 30-minute cellar tour. Poças walks you through an aging cellar where wines have matured for more than 100 years. Real Companhia Velha adds its private Silva Reis family cellar, which holds over 16,000 bottles with the oldest dating to 1765.

For Poças and Real Companhia Velha, several listings show the exact meeting point only at booking, so check your confirmation. Because the lodges sit close together on the Gaia bank, two or three visits in a row is easy to arrange.

Port on the River, a Food Walk or a Douro Day

Not every wine tour in Porto happens inside a cellar. Two boats, a food walk and a full Douro day cover the rest.

The Two Boat Options

The best wine boat tours in Porto are Port Wine River Cruise if you want actual port, and Porto Yacht Cruise with Wine if you want the river itself. The first is a shared 2-hour boat from R. da Praia in Gaia with 4 port tastings, an afternoon and a sunset timetable. The second is a 2-hour yacht for up to 12 guests that passes under the 6 bridges, continues past Afurada to the river mouth and pours Vinho Verde, not port.

TourPriceHoursWineRoute
Port Wine River Cruise$622 hours4 portsPorto and Gaia along the bridges, from R. da Praia in Gaia
Porto Yacht Cruise with Wine$62.992 hoursVinho Verde, not port6 bridges to where the Douro meets the sea, up to 12 guests

A Food Walk with a Port Pour

Porto Food and Wine Tour is a food tour with wine rather than a wine tasting. It runs 3 hours through central Porto for up to 10 people and costs $79.02. You get 10 to 12 petiscos as a full meal, plus a glass of Vinho Verde, a glass of Port, a local beer and coffee or tea.

The listing warns it is not suited to gluten-free, vegetarian or vegan travelers.

Is the Douro Valley Day Worth It?

Douro Valley Wine Tour from Porto costs $113.38 and takes a full 10 hours, so it is a commitment. The honest answer is that it depends on what you want. The Douro Valley is where the port grapes grow, and this tour visits 2 wine estates with tastings, includes a traditional lunch and adds a 50-minute rabelo cruise from Pinhão.

It holds a 4.9 rating from 20,781 reviews, the most reviewed tour on this page. What it does not give you is the Gaia lodges, which are where port actually ages. If your day is short, the cellar visits in Gaia are the better use of it.

If you have a spare day, the valley is the source of the wine you tasted across the river.

Port Lodges You Can Visit on Your Own

Several lodges in Vila Nova de Gaia sell their own visits online or take walk-ins at the counter. The prices below are the lodges' own, not tour prices.

The Sandeman lodge and its cloaked Don figure on the Gaia riverside, a stop for port wine tours in Porto $26 · 50 min

Sandeman

Sandeman's own 50-minute cellar visit with white, ruby and tawny is in the catalog as the Sandeman Cellar Tour at $26. The cellars at Largo Miguel Bombarda open daily 10:00-12:30 and 14:00-18:00, with last tours at 12:15 and 17:15, and the listing is often close to selling out, so book a slot before you cross the river.

A glass of Ferreira tawny port, the style poured on Ferreira visits and on Porto wine tours €23 · 50 min

Ferreira

The Porto Ferreira visit also costs €23.00 for 50 minutes and 3 ports. The dearer Dona Antónia visit is €35.00 for 1h30 and 5 ports, and combo tickets with Serralves or Casa da Música start at €28.00. The cellars on Av. Ramos Pinto 70 open daily 10:00-12:30 and 14:00-18:00. For a guided multi-lodge day, see the Port and Douro Wine Tasting Tour with 9 tastings.

Burmester

€22 · guided tour

Burmester sits at Largo Ponte Luiz I, by the bottom deck of the bridge, open Monday to Sunday 10:00-13:00 and 14:00-19:00 with the last visit at 18:15. The Classic Tasting costs from €22.00 for 2 ports, and the Premium at €23.00 adds chocolates and a third pour. Children up to 5 go free and ages 6-17 pay €10.00. It is the first lodge you reach off the lower deck, and the Port Wine Cellars Tour (3 Cellars) takes in three producers with a guide.

The yellow Ramos Pinto building in Vila Nova de Gaia, a port lodge visited on Porto wine tours from €13 · walk-in

Ramos Pinto

Ramos Pinto is the easiest for walk-ins: tastings without a visit need no reservation and start at €13.00 for the Beginner flight, while the guided visit with Classic Tasting costs €20.00. It opens every day 10:00-18:00, and children 12-17 pay €10.00 while under 12 go free. To taste across several houses instead, the Port Wine Cellars Tour (3 Cellars) caps the group at 12.

Quevedo

from €14 · 40 min

Quevedo Lodge pours flights of 40 minutes with a minimum of 2 people: the Douro DOC Discovery costs €14.00 and the Porto Discovery €16.00 per person. It opens every day, 11:00-19:00 from November to March and 12:00-20:00 from April to October. For Douro DOC wines next to port with a guide, see the Port and Douro Wine Tasting Tour.

IVDP Port Wine Bar

self-service bar

The IVDP visitor centre sits on the Porto side of the river at Rua Ferreira Borges 27, not in Gaia, with a self-service Port Wine Bar where you choose eight ports via a magnetic card. One page lists hours of 10:00-19:30, while the shop page says closed Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays, so check before you go. Prices are not listed on the site. On the guided side, the Port Wine Lodges Walking Tour starts on the same Ribeira bank.

Planning an Afternoon in Gaia on Your Own

The lodges close at different hours and some shut for lunch, so the order of your visits matters more than the distance between them.

Closing Times That Shape the Route

The table sets out the opening hours and the last entry each lodge prints on its own site, for the lodges that sell visits directly. Sandeman and Ferreira close from 12:30 to 14:00 and take their last afternoon tour at 17:15. Burmester breaks from 13:00 to 14:00 and admits the last visit at 18:15.

A Route That Works

Start with a booked visit at Sandeman or Ferreira before 12:15, or after 14:00 once the lunch break ends. Burmester sits by the bottom deck of the bridge, so it suits the end of the day when you walk back to Ribeira, with the last visit at 18:15. Ramos Pinto needs no reservation for its tastings, which makes it the easy second stop if a slot elsewhere is full. Quevedo stays open until 20:00 from April to October and is the late option.

Two lodges in an afternoon is plenty once each one pours 3 ports. On the way back up, the Gaia Cable Car from Cais de Gaia to Jardim do Morro costs €7.00 one way and closes at 18:00, 19:00 or 20:00 depending on the season. If you would rather not plan slots at all, the Port Wine Lodges Walking Tour books 3 houses and 7 tastings in one go, and the Port and Douro Wine Tasting Tour pours 9.

Getting to the Lodges in Vila Nova De Gaia

The port lodges line the Gaia riverfront, a short hop from Ribeira. Here are the ways across, with the official fares and the cable car operator's timetable. More on the city across the river is on Vila Nova de Gaia and Ponte Luís I.

Ways Across the River

The figures below come from the Gaia Cable Car operator and the Metro do Porto fare table. Walking is free in both directions, and the walking tours meet on foot at either end of the bridge.

Cable Car Hours and the Bridge

The Teleférico de Gaia runs 10:00-20:00 from 26 April to 24 September, 10:00-19:00 in the shoulder seasons from 24 March to 25 April and 25 September to 24 October, and 10:00-18:00 from 25 October to 23 March. It closes only on Christmas Day, and Andante tickets are not valid on board.

The Ponte Luís I below was built between 1881 and 1886 as a double-deck iron arch. The upper deck carries the light rail and pedestrians, the lower deck carries public transport and pedestrians. A good pattern is to ride the cable car down to Cais de Gaia, work along the riverfront lodges, then walk back across the free lower deck to Ribeira.

Port Styles You Will Taste

The IVDP, the institute that regulates port, groups the wine into a few families. Knowing them makes the tasting lists on the lodge visits much easier to read. The full explainer is what is port wine, with ruby vs tawny port and vintage port on their own pages.

The Main Styles

The table follows the IVDP's own grouping of port into four families, with the ageing rules the institute states for each style.

StyleFamilyWhat sets it apart
RubyRubyThe base style of the ruby family
ReserveRuby or tawnyA reserve level exists in both families
LBVRubyOne year, aged four to six years in wood
VintageRubyOne year, bottled after two to three years, then 10 to 50 years in bottle
TawnyTawnyThe base style of the tawny family
10, 20, 30, 40 yearsTawnyA tawny sold with an indication of age
ColheitaTawnyOne year, at least seven years in cask
WhiteWhiteExtra dry to very sweet, plus Lágrima. Reserve White spends about seven years in wood
RoséRoséLightly macerated red grapes, drunk young, chilled or with ice

What the Numbers on the Bottle Mean

Port is a fortified wine from the Demarcated Region of the Douro, usually 19-22% vol, though Light Dry White Port has a minimum alcohol of 16.5%. The region itself dates to 10 September 1756, when it was demarcated under the Marquis of Pombal with the Companhia Geral da Agricultura das Vinhas do Alto Douro.

The barrels once came downriver on rabelo boats, flat-bottomed wooden cargo boats that carried the wine to the Gaia lodges. The companies still keep rabelos on the river, and a rabelo race is held on 24 June for São João. That history explains the classic entry-level flight you get on the cheaper visits: white, ruby and tawny, one pour from each broad family, before the older tawnies on the dearer options.

Before You Cross the River

Do

  • Do book the lodge walks ahead, because groups are capped at 12 on the CD Porto tour, 18 on the Porto Walkers tour and 20 on the EFun tour.
  • Do bring ID if you look young, because the tours serve alcohol only from 18.
  • Do eat before a walk with 7 or 9 tastings, because port is a sweet fortified wine at 19-22% vol and the operators themselves advise a good lunch first.
  • Do check whether your lodge visit is guided or audio, because the Taylor's ticket is self-guided with an audio guide on your phone while Graham's, Cálem, Poças and Real Companhia Velha use live guides.
  • Do take the cable car down to Cais de Gaia for €7.00 and walk back across the free lower deck of the Ponte Luís I.

Don't

  • Don't expect hotel pickup on the Gaia tours, because the lodge walks and cellar visits all meet on foot.
  • Don't bring under-16s on the CD Porto tour, because it is adults only at 16 and over and everyone needs a reservation.
  • Don't plan to drive after a tasting, because port reaches 19-22% vol.
  • Don't assume the yacht cruise pours port, because the Atalaia Gold cruise serves Vinho Verde, not Port.

Is a Wine Tour in Porto Worth It

Honest trade-offs between a guided walk and doing the lodges on your own.

What we genuinely like

  • A guide explains the port styles and picks the houses, so you do not research which lodges are worth your time.
  • You get 7 to 9 tastings on the walks, roughly twice the pours of a single lodge visit, for about twice the price.
  • Groups are capped at 12, 18 or 20 on the walking tours, so the guide can answer questions.
  • One booking covers everything, with no separate time slots to reserve at each lodge.

The honest downsides

  • A single lodge visit on the cards costs $22 to $28, so doing one or two on your own costs less than a walk.
  • Some lodges such as Ramos Pinto and Quevedo take walk-in tastings from €13.00, which undercuts the tours further.
  • A 3.5-4 hour walk with 7 tastings is a lot of fortified wine in one afternoon, even with breaks.

Who it's NOT for: Not for travelers who want vineyards and scenery rather than cellars, which is what the Douro Valley day exists for.

Brilliant. The audio guide is very interesting and the tour covered all the stages in Port production. The garden setting for the Port tasting was excellent.

Perfect in knowledge and experience understanding of the Port wine process and the distinct regions of production. Best of quality and I must suggest looking lunch or dinner directly after at the restaurant. You will not be disappointed in this.

Port museum self-guided, guided cellar and port-making tour, tasting in social (or not so if you desire) area. We had 3 tawny’s since I like those. My wife, not such a port drinker, loved them too. Calem puts on a great tour, even if you already know a bit about Port vs unfortified wine. Especially great on a hot day, as the cellars are cool.

Our guide, Fabia, led us on an informative and fun tour of the Poças cellars. A good mix of the history of the wine, the geography of the vineyards and especially the production process. Lovely bar for the tasting session, with a good range of bottles to take home in the accompanying shop. Our group (of 20) thoroughly enjoyed it.

Porto Wine Tours: Your Questions

What is the best wine tour in Porto?

The pick is the Port Wine Lodges Walking Tour, with a 4.9 rating from 2,295 reviews. It visits 3 port houses with 7 tastings in 3.5-4 hours for $64.14.

How much does a port wine tasting cost in Porto?

On the cards, single lodge visits run from $22 at Real Companhia Velha to $45 at Graham's, while guided walks of several lodges cost $56.12 to $64.14. Lodges sold on their own sites start at €13.00 for a walk-in tasting at Ramos Pinto.

Do you need to book port cellar tours in advance?

The guided walks should be booked ahead because groups are capped at 12 to 20, as on the Port Wine Cellars Tour (3 Cellars). On the do-it-yourself side, Ramos Pinto takes walk-in tastings without a reservation, though its guided visits run on fixed time slots.

How many port lodges can you fit in one afternoon?

A guided walk covers 3 lodges in 2.5 to 4 hours, like the Port and Douro Wine Tasting Tour with 9 tastings in 3 hours. On your own, each lodge visit lasts 40 minutes to 2 hours, so count two lodges as a full afternoon of drinking.

Can children join a port wine tour in Porto?

Wine is served only from 18, and the Port Wine Cellars Tour (3 Cellars) is adults only at 16 and over. Taylor's pours a Douro grape juice for children on its cellar visit, and some lodges charge a reduced child rate.

Is there any free port tasting in Porto?

Yes, once a year. Port Wine Day falls on 10 September, instituted by the IVDP, and the IVDP building in Porto offers free guided tastings and tours. The rest of the year, your cheapest options are the walk-in flights at Ramos Pinto from €13.00 or the Real Companhia Velha Cellar Tour at $22.

Cross the bridge with a guide: the Port Wine Lodges Walking Tour covers 3 port houses and 7 tastings in under 4 hours.
